Gift Idea: Fabric Covered Notebooks

I had been contemplating for days what to give Claire's teachers this year for Christmas. We wanted to give them something nice but something that would work with our Christmas budget. I was looking through my craft supplies and saw this owl fabric I had bought several weeks ago. Since Claire's teacher loves owls I thought it would be perfect! So I decided to use it to make one of these fabric covered notebooks. This was a really easy and fast project as you can get it done in one nap time!

You will need:
  • A notebook
  • Coordinating fabrics
  • Matching ribbon
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread
You could adapt this to fit any size notebook. Mine measures 5.5" wide by 8 1/8" tall.

First you start by measuring your notebook. To get the width you measure around your notebook with the book closed. Mine measures 12" wide by 8 1/8" tall. I added 2/8" to the height and 1/8" to the width to give the cover a little bit of room on each side. I also added 1/2" to each side for seams.

Here are all my pieces cut out. The large back piece measures 9 3/8"x 13 1/8". (My finished measurements plus seams) The two side pieces measure 6"x 9 3/8". Then I cut out a piece using green fabric the same measurement as the side pieces (6" x 9 3/8") and cut it in half. This will be used for the pockets.

First you want to finish the top edge of your pockets. Create a 1/4" double fold hem and sew in place.

Then pin your pocket pieces to the bottoms of the side pieces with the right sides facing up.
Sew around the two sides and along the bottom leaving the finished edge at the top open.

Then your going to finish the two inside edges of each side piece using the same 1/4 double fold hem you used on the top of the pockets. This is how it will look from the font.

The back view of the side seams.

Lay the side pieces on top of the larger rectangle piece with the right sides facing and the seams in the middle. Sew along the edges using 1/2" seam allowance.

I trimmed my corners and turned it inside out so it looks like this. To hide the raw edges of the seams in between the two side pieces I turned them under and sewed in place.

Next I created a tie closure by adding a ribbon to each side of the cover. I turned the notebook inside out again and took out 4 or 5 stitches where I wanted my ribbon to go. I poked the end of the ribbon through the opening I just made so the majority of the ribbon is going through the inside of the cover like this. Don't forget to melt the edges of the ribbon with a lighter to prevent fraying.

Sew along the seam where your took out the stitches securing the ribbon in place. Do this for each side so you'll have one ribbon on each side.

Now when you turn it right side out you can tie it.

Here's the inside view with the pockets.

I made them some matching fabric bookmarks with satin flowers.

I added this little tag to the Sharpies  because as Matt would say I'm kinda cheesy like that. =)

I used these little cooler/ lunch totes Matt's mom ordered for me from her work as gift bags. And used the adorable owl gift tags I found on Pinterest. You can download them here.

Her teachers loved them and they didn't break the bank!

Linking up with some of these parties. Check them out!!

What great teacher gifts! So useful and clever. I think I will have to try the covered notebooks for gifts next year!
