Brick Fireplace Makeover and Fall Decor

So, today I'm showing you my brick fireplace makeover. When we bought our little modest homestead several years ago I knew I had a lot of work to do but I had no idea it would take so long! We moved into our home in February and I remember thinking I would be done by Christmas! HA! Ignorance is bliss I guess right? To be honest I am a terrible procrastinator and when we started having kids a lot of projects got put on hold. Below is a picture of our fireplace before. Brick can be beautiful and I know it is great in some homes but I really wanted something a little lighter. And honestly I hated the mantel. At first I thought about covering the mantel with molding and painting it. Or completely covering the brick like Layla at The Lettered Cottage. But I wasn't quite sure how to do it with the style of mantel I have and I was advised not to take it off so I didn't. I contemplated painting it for a long time but was a little scared since painting was such a permanent option. But I took the chance and I love it! It really brightens up the living room. We do have a lot of windows but our home is surrounded by several trees so it blocks a lot of light.

Here is what I did in case you're interested in painting your fireplace.
  1. I cleaned it really well! I vacuumed using the brush attachment and then wiped it down with a wet rag.
  2. Then I rolled the paint on with a nappy roller meant for textured surfaces. I used a paint brush to get in the crevices. You really have to smash it in there to get good coverage. Brick is especially porous material so you will need to use more paint than you normally would for such a small area. I used almost an entire gallon for this project.
  3. Let dry and decorate!

Here are some closeups of my fall decorations for this year.

I purchased this picture several years ago when I was in college. It's by Cory Godbey and I love it! If you are interested in seeing more of his work you can see it here.

I wish I would have done it sooner!

So what do you think?
